Olympic and world 800m gold medallist Caster Semenya will make her return to the track alongside other Olympic stars at the Newton Classic Shootout event in Johannesburg.

The meeting sees South African Olympic track stars competing alongside high school athletes in a bid to encourage them to take up sport for enjoyment as well as competing.

Semenya, 28, will compete in the 300m as it makes its debut at the unique event sponsored by Newton Sports Agency as well as sports brand Nike and sports stats company Backtrack.

Other stars at the event include Akani Simbine and Clarence Munyai who will go head-to-head in a blockbuster 150m race.

A spokesman for EC Active, owners of the Classic Shootout, said: "By competing with our greatest track athletes, these young athletes get to watch and learn and be inspired.”

Semenya's glittering career included two Olympic and three World 800m titles as well as a World Championship 1500m bronze from London 2017, but this will be the first time fans have seen her compete in public in a shorter distance race.

The 800m champion will not be returning to defend her title at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after new IAAF rules surrounding testosterone levels were introduced meaning that she would not be able to compete without testosterone reducing medication.

Semenya has elevated levels caused by differences of sexual development (DSD) and is considered to have a biological advantage over her competition.

She took the case to court but was unsuccessful in her appeal against the IAAF in November.

Since then she has signed for South African women's football team JVW with whom she started training in September and will make her debut for this year.
