Ireland women's hockey create history by qualifying for Tokyo 2020 after penalty shoot-out

Ireland women's hockey have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after they won 4-3 on penalties against Canada.

Canada opened the game confidently but couldn't create much in the first quarter. 

As the match progressed both teams picked up the tempo but still couldn't find the back of the net. Ireland's Amanda Flanagan was dominant and had a penalty corner but it was saved. 

Ireland had a total of eight quarters of hockey at the weekend and failed to score.

Ans so with the game finishing at 0-0, it was down to a penalty shootout.

Both sides were feeling the pressure in their last opportunity to qualify and at 3-3 the tie went to sudden death. 

Canada's Amanda Woodcroft was the last player to step forward needing to score t keep her side in  it but Ireland goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran saved and Ireland were heading to Tokyo.
