Real Madrid have finally launched their own women’s team to compete in the Primera Division’s 2020/21 season.

The Spanish giants bought Madrid-based club CD Tacon for 300,000 euros, which has now been renamed Real Madrid Femenino.

Real were the only major football club in Europe to not have a women’s team. 

In a statement the club said: "Real Madrid will play the women's football competitions from the 2020-21 season, with Real Madrid City as the venue for the team's matches and training sessions.

"Our women's football section will be made up of the senior and Under-16s to Under-19s teams. A youth structure that will allow us to remain faithful to our philosophy of identifying, training and developing young talent. Our teams will also play their respective competitions from the 2020-21 season.

“Real Madrid are looking forward to this new challenge with a commitment to promoting women's football and contributing to its development and growth in our society.”

Real president Florentino Perez added: "The time has come to build a team that you will all be very proud of."

CD Tacon was originally an independent women’s club and finished tenth last season out of sixteen teams in their first season in the top-flight women’s league. 

Real women are planning to focus on recruiting young Spanish talent rather than looking abroad.
