History made after Wales women announce rugby league international debut

Wales women are set to make history after announcing that they are playing in their first rugby league international. They are going to play England Lions women in November.

The England team will be drawn from players in the Championship and League 1 sides as the national side are touring the southern hemisphere.

Before they face off against rivals England the women in red will be playing a warm up match against Great Britain Teachers on October 26 at Sardis Road in Pontypridd.

Despite the England team not being at full strength, Wales are treating the match as their first test match.

The games are being played ahead of the possibility Wales could compete in the 2021 Emerging Nations World Cup.

Matches have already taken place across Wales to make their case for joining the tournament. Two successful games took place between the Cardiff Blue Dragons and Rhondda Outlaws in July. An East v West game also took place that saw 50 women play rugby league for the first time.

A representative for Wales Rugby League, Gareth Kear, said: "We've had huge response to the launch of women's rugby league in Wales from players to fans alike.

"The road to the 2021 World Cup competitions looks very bright for both our senior men's and women's teams."

The Wales v England game will take place on November 16 at Leigh Miners Rangers RLFC.
