The Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) in 2021 is to increase the number of days between matches in an attempt to aid player welfare.

Currently the protocol is to have a three day turnaround between games but the governing bodies have decided to change it to a minimum of four.

The decision was made following discussions between players, the International Rugby League (IRL), Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) and national federations.

The original schedule for the tournament was agreed early last year but due to concerns for player welfare, the new guidelines will be implemented.

Jon Dutton, the RLWC chief executive, said: "We have listened to and consulted every interested party over the last few months and we feel this is the best outcome for everyone, particularly the welfare of the athletes. 

“It is important that we recognise the evolution of the women’s game and are at the forefront of leading the way on player welfare. 

“We have received outstanding cooperation from our hosts, IRL, RLPA and nations and most importantly player representatives.” 

To protect the players even further, the IRL are looking to extend the turnaround to five days for the World Cup in 2025.

The general manager of stakeholder relations at the RLPA, Clint Newton, said: “With improved minimum standards and conditions, and increased turnaround times between matches, RLWC2021 is shaping up to be the best in women’s rugby league history.”
