Rugby league's Courtney Hill has contemplated retirement due to strain of sport

Leeds Rhino's Courtney Hill has said she contemplated retiring from rugby league due to the physical strain of the sport.

Hill used to play professional cricket in the Big Bash in Australia. The sportswoman switched sports as she moved to the UK to be with her partner, English cricketer Lauren Winfield.

The change in sport has been a shock to the system for Hill though, with rugby league taking its toll.

She said: “Sometimes on Monday mornings I wake up and I feel hit by a bus, but I do feel like I’m just learning to understand the game.

“But I think the hardest thing is women’s sport and where it’s at, particularly in rugby league.

“I’m probably in a position now where I’m going to have to start making some decisions not based on whether I can [play on] physically or mentally, but whether I can justify the sacrifice of career or opportunity in my coaching life.” Hill told The Telegraph.

Hill was a part of the match day squad that beat Castleford Tigers in July to secure the Challenge Cup title. Despite her achievements so far in rugby league, the 32-year-old is tempted to switch back to cricket.

She added: “I’m not going to write cricket off and cricket’s doing amazing things over here.

"Given that rugby league is so amateur, I’m tempted to switch back, I’m going to be honest. Whether that’d be playing or coaching I really want to sink my teeth into that.”

For the moment, Hill remains playing at Leeds Rhino's who have made the Grand Final of the Women's Super League this Friday. They will once again face off against Castleford Tigers.

The final will be broadcast on Sky Sports, the first time the women's final has been televised.
