Rugby team rally behind first player to be suspended from national league

A women's rugby team are rallying behind one of their players who became the first in history to be suspended from the National Rugby League.

Teuila Fotu-Moala was cited for a grade two dangerous tackle in a match against Brisbane.

But St George Illawarra Dragons' team-mate Maddison Weatherall says the club are now  determined to win the rugby league title in a show of support.

Fotu-Moala carried out a 'crusher tackle' on opponent Lavinia Gould - a dangerous tackle in which the opponent's chin is forced down towards their torso.

She was originally banned for three games meaning she would be available for the league's grand final. However, The Dragons attempted to appeal the ruling which extended the ban by an extra week.

Weatherall said: "All of us have tried to play for her and we made a pact to take out the competition for her and all the other girls who can't play.

"It's going to be a big crowd because of the men's game shortly after, we're excited but it's a bit nerve-racking so we've got to contain that."

The Dragons beat The Sydney Roosters to claim their place in the final, where they will face defending champions Brisbane at the ANZ Stadium on Sunday.
