2020 Rugby Africa Cup's men's and women's tournaments to be played at same time

Rugby Africa have announced that women's and men's matches at the 2020 Rugby Africa Cup will be played on the same days for the first time.

The news was revealed as a a part of celebrating International Women's Day and is being used as part of Rugby Africa's #EachforEqual campaign which focuses on celebrating female players, referees, officials and managers.

Women's matches will be played as the curtain-raiser for the men's where possible as the tournaments run along side each other.

Rugby Africa President Khaled Babbou described this as 'a logic step' to implement the country's vision for a gender equal sport.

"We are dedicated to take leadership in women's rugby and look forward to developing grassroots sports as well as the flagship competitions towards a gender equal game," he said.

"In a next step we need to look at creating tournaments in the various regions to organically develop and grow team participation."

South Africa will defend their title at this year's tournament against Kenya, Madagascar and Uganda.

Matches in the Rugby Africa Cup will run from May 30 to July 3.
