Harlequins captain Rachael Burford says it's time to develop a European league in light of historic match against Leinster at Twickenham

Harlequins captain Rachael Burford has said it is time for a women's European league just before her team faces Leinster for the first time at Twickenham.

The two teams will battle it out tonight for the first women's club game at the home of England rugby.

Burford said: "Maybe the top four teams from the Premiership could start a competition with the top four teams in Europe that might be the first way to go, opposed to a whole new structure and league that will get the best product.

"I think there is a time and place for that. I think at the moment we need to get the Premier 15s up to a really high standard. We want it to be competitive across all the teams which at the moment it's not quite there."

The centre has said her side is excited to play a side they haven't faced before.

She said: "It will be our first time playing them. Their history of being back-to-back champions in their set up, we are really excited to take them on.

"It is actually really nice to play people you haven't before, it brings that excitement. We know they have a wealth of talent in their squad and any team that goes back-to-back is a pretty solid team.

"We are really looking forward to hosting them and who knows this might set something new up for the league in the future."
