Scotland rugby's Lana Skelton on the importance of speaking about periods

Scotland rugby player Lana Skelton has said it is important to speak openly about periods.

The hooker has played for Scotland 39 times and has now come out and spoken about how periods can affect her performance on the pitch.

She said: "There's nothing to be ashamed about, talking about anything to do with your period. I think nowadays it's really important that you can feel like you can talk to anybody about it.

"When you're in a squad environment, there's nothing worse if you're having a rough time or if you need something and you feel like you can't talk about it, you feel really restricted. It will affect your performance.

"I've always had pretty difficult periods to deal with. They make me quite ill actually, so in terms of dealing with them on a competition weekend or a training weekend can be quite difficult.

"I just think it's really important that people - especially young people - have the ability to speak freely about it and not be ashamed or embarrassed."

Skelton is a part of Scotland's current Six Nations squad who will host France on March 7.
