Shadow sports minister calls Liverpool's WSL relegation ‘painfully ironic’ when comparing to male counterparts

Shadow sports minister Alison McGovern has said Liverpool’s relegation from the Women’s Super League is ’painfully ironic’.

The two-time WSL champions were relegated on Friday after the Football Association and clubs voted in favour of a points-per-game system to determine the final league standings.

Meanwhile the men’s side are currently 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League, which resumes next week. And it is inconceivable they won’t win the title.

McGovern told Sky Sports News: “The painful irony isn't lost on me that Liverpool's men are 25 points clear while Liverpool's women have been relegated.”

She added: "The team tried incredibly hard, I've been to watch them. But they need stronger investment and I think that Liverpool should do more. I'm not embarrassed to say that I don't think it's good enough.”

Manager Vicky Jepson said she was ’disappointed’ with the conclusion of the season and found it a ’difficult pill to swallow’.
