Simone Biles wins Sportswoman of the Year at Laureus Awards as Messi and Hamilton share men's title

Simone Biles has been crowned Sportswoman of the Year at the 2020 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The 22 year-old won another five world championship titles in October as she took her tally of Olympic and world gold medals to 30.

Beating the likes of Naomi Osaka and Megan Rapinoe to the award, Biles was not present to collect the honour, but spoke to the audience remotely from her training base in Houston, USA.

She said: "This means the world to me. I want to thank my family and friends."

Meanwhile, six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and legendary footballer Lionel Messi shared the Sportsman of the Year crown.

In his acceptance speech, Hamilton shone a light on the lack of diversity in his sport.

"I grew up in a sport that has given my life meaning," he said. "But I've grown up in a sport which has little to no diversity.

"It's an issue we are continually facing. It's all of our responsibilities to use our platform to push for gender equality and inclusivity. We have to make sure we are engaging and representing what the world is today."
