Snowboarder Katie Ormerod found out she was world champion via text due to coronavirus

Katie Ormerod has said that she found out she was snowboarding world champion via text after the tournament was cancelled due to coronavirus.

She became Great Britain's first snowboarding World Cup champion this week.

She said: “I just woke up to a text message from my coach saying that I am a crystal globe winner. That was the best way to wake up.

“It would be nice to have been able to step on the podium,

"I’m still making the most of being in the moment and enjoying being the champion. I’m not really thinking about anything else too much, I’m just excited I’ve won," she told The Telegraph.

Ormerod injured herself at the Pyongyang Winter Olympics two years ago where her heal broke in two.

She has said she has more aspirations in the sport going forward.

"I feel like I've still got so much more to give, I feel like this is just the start of my comeback journey.

"I grew up riding dry-slope and I’m now the overall World Cup slopestyle champion. It just proves if you can put your mind to it you can achieve your dreams."
