Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic withdraws from WTA’s Prague Open

Tennis star Belinda Bencic has pulled out from WTA’s 2020 Prague Open.

The 23 year-old Swiss player did not give a reason for her withdrawal from the event but has since been replaced by world No 59 Alize Cornet.

Benic, the current world No 8, said: “I regret not participating in the tournament. I wish the organisers to be able to organise a successful event.”

She will now set her sights on the Western and Southern Open and the US Open which are both scheduled to take place later this month.

Prague’s tournament director David Trunda added: “We are in daily contact with all the players and their managers. We have no indication that any further withdrawals should come and are still preparing for the participation of an extremely strong line-up.”

The 2020 Prague Open is set to take place on August 10-16.

The WTA Tour made a return on Monday for the first time since March at the Palermo Open in Italy.

The event returned just one positive Covid-19 test hours before the qualifying events took place on Saturday.
