38 iconic Serena moments to mark her 38th birthday

Tennis queen Serena Williams turns 38 today and to mark the occasion we had a look through the archives and picked out (in no particular order) 38 special moments in her career. The real question is, which is the MOST iconic?

1. First Grand Slam title (1999) Beat Monica Seles (No 4), Lindsay Davenport (No 2) and Martina Hingis (No 1) to claim the US Open title.

2. THAT catsuit (2018) Need we say more?

3. No-one puts Serena in the corner (2018) After being told the catsuit wasn’t allowed, Serena appeared at the US Open in a black tutu designed by Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh, and Nike.

4. Doing the double at the US Open (1999) Alongside older sister Venus, Serena won the doubles title, meaning all the women’s silverware made was claimed by the sisters.

5. Turned Professional (1995) Aged only 14, Serena turned pro and was receiving a lot of media attention for it.

6. First Williams v Williams grand slam game (1998) Venus won 7-6(7-4) 6-1 in this second round meeting at the Australian open.

7. Made the final on her first US Open appearance (1997) Became the first woman since Pam Shriver in 1978 to achieve this.

8. Serena Slam (2003) Won four straight slams starting with her first French Open in 2002 followed by Wimbledon and US Open and Australian Open 2003.

9. Sudden dental surgery (2008) Serena was fighting her way back to the top but lost in the quarter finals at the Australian Open then withdrew from a number of tournaments because of “emergency dental surgery” although there is very little known about it…

10. Entered top 100 for the first time (1997) Only two years after turning pro, Serena crept into the top 100, having been number 304 just 12 months previously.

11. US Open final (2018) Serena’s most infamous on-court controversy in the final against Naomi Osaka. After being accused of receiving on-court coaching, the argument between Williams and chair umpire Carol Ramos heated up and took away the shine from Osaka’s first grand slam victory.

12. Public essay about US Open final (2019) Published an essay in Harper’s Bazaar in which she publicly apologised to Naomi Osaka and admitted the incident almost made her walk away from the sport.

13. First Wimbledon title (2002) Beat defending champion sister Venus 7-6(7-4) 6-3 in the final to steal the world No 1 spot from her older sister.

14. Winning Australian Open while pregnant (2017) Beat her sister in the final without losing a set along the way. This was her 23rd Grand Slam victory and it was later revealed that she was eight weeks' pregnant at the time.

15. Quitting match and refusing to shake hands (1998) Aged 16 she lost to Virginia Ruana when she gave up halfway through the second set and lost 7-4 4-1, then refused to shake hands with her opponent

16. Terrible umpiring at US Open (2004) Serena returned from injury and was on the way back up the rankings but some horrendous officiating in her quarter-final against Jennifer Capriati resulted in a 2-6 6-4 6-4 loss and a huge influence on the implementation of the challenge system.

17. Threatening an official (2009) After losing the first semi-final set to Kim Clijsters, Williams slammed her racket on the court and received a warning. Later in the game she was called for a double fault and shouted and pointed at the line judge and allegedly threatened her.

18. “You’re ugly inside” (2011) When losing to Sam Stosur in the final, Williams celebrated before Stosur had a chance to hit her return. Chair umpire Eva Asderaki called Serena for hindrance meaning a point penalty and a break for Stosur. Serena refused to accept this and shouted at Asderaki: “Are you the one that screwed me over the last time here? You’re nobody. You’re ugly on the inside.” She then continued the rant at the change-over, saying: “You ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way. You’re out of control, totally out of control. You’re a hater and you’re unattractive inside.” She went on to lose the match.

19. Launches her own clothing line (2018) Unveiled the name of the brand, Serena, in May and then later on in the year expanded the clothing sizes to make dresses to fit ‘every’ woman’s body.

20. Absolutely kills it at The Royal Wedding (2018) Radiated class and sophistication as she watched pal Meghan marry Prince Harry.

21. Reaching World No 1 for the first time (2002) Finally topped the world rankings and remained there for 57 consecutive weeks.

22. Glass foot injury (2010) In an unfortunate incident in Munich, stood on broken glass and needed 18 stitches as well as surgery that put her out for the rest of the season.

23. Gave birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian Junior (2017) On September 1, Williams and husband Alexis announced the birth of their first child.

24. Maria Sharapova upset (2004) Serena looked on course to make it three Wimbledons in a row but the teenage 6ft Russian steam-rolled her with a 6-1 6-4 victory.

25. Partners Andy Murray in Wimbledon mixed doubles (2019) “If you guys really want it..all right, done.” Williams and Murray caved to media peer pressure and lit up the mixed doubles stage at The All England Club.

26. Topped world doubles rankings with sister Venus (2010) After beating Liezel Huber and Anabel Medina Garrigues in the semi-final at Roland Garros, the sisters, who already occupied the top two singles spots, made their way to the top of the doubles too. In doing so, Serena became just the 6th woman at No 1 in both disciplines.

27. Sisters play each other in four consecutive Grand Slam finals (2002-2003) Beginning at the French Open in 2002 and up to the Australian Open in 2003. Serena was victorious in all four. They were the first women to do this in the open era.

28. First Grand Slam match win (1998) Beat Irina Spirlea in the first round at the Australian Open. The first of many...

29. Serena and Beyoncé (2016) Made a cameo twerking appearance in Bey Bey’s ‘sorry’ music video.

30. Shut down a Journalist (2016) After beating Elena Vesnina in the Wimbledon semi-final she was asked her feelings on being “one of the greatest female athletes of all time,” to which she responded: “I prefer the words ‘one of the greatest of all time'."

31. Married Alexis Ohanian (2017) The power couple solidified their superstar status when they tied the knot. Alexis is co-founder and executive chairman of Reddit.

32. First main draw win (1997) Having turned pro aged 14, the 16-year-old got her first main-draw win as she made it to the semi-finals in Chicago.

33. Return post pregnancy (2018) Overcame pregnancy-induced health problems to make her return to the court alongside Venus at the Fed Cup.

34. The first Serena comeback (2004) Returned from eight months away from the pro tour to win in Miami for the third consecutive year.

35. Battle of the sexes: Williams v Karsten Braasch (1998) The Williams sisters claimed they could beat any man outside the world top 200. Braasch (world No 203) beat 16-year-old Serena 6-1 and Venus 6-2.

36. Return to the top 10 (2019) Having taken time out to have a baby and suffering illness post-pregnancy, Williams climbed back into the top ten

37. The Elusive 24 (2019) Cruised to the final of Wimbledon but lost to Simona Halep meaning Margaret Court’s record still evades her.

38. 13 consecutive years of finals (2019) In reaching the final at Wimbledon Serena made it 13 years in a row that she has made a Grand Slam final, also becoming the oldest finalist at a grand slam in the open era.

This tennis champ just keeps providing with monumental achievements and has no intention of stopping yet. In a panel appearance in honour of Advertising Week New York, the 23-time Grand Slam winner says she plans to “transfer out, you know, in 20 years. Not anytime soon,” to which the room responded with a round of applause.
