Bianca Andreescu beats American Taylor Townsend to move into US Open quarter-finals

Bianca Andreescu defeated American Taylor Townsend in front of her opponent's home crowd to move into the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career.

The 19-year-old won 6-1 4-6 6-2 in a thrilling match which lasted almost two hours in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After flying through the first set in little more than 30 minutes, Andreescu was pulled back by Townsend as the Chicago-born player broke at the end of the second.

But the Canadian managed to step up her game in the decider and break twice to set up a clash with Elise Mertens.

Andreescu is one of only three females to have made the quarter-finals in their debut US Open since Venus Williams in 1997.

Her next opponent, Mertens, breezed through her last 16 match against qualifier Kristie Ahn 6-1 6-1 and will also be making her debut appearance in the last eight.

The other side of the draw sees Britain's Johanna Konta take on fifth seed Elina Svitolina.

And six-time winner Serena Williams will continue her pursuit of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title when she faces 18th seed Wang Qiang.
