Britain's Johanna Konta moved past German Tatjana Maria in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open.

The 28 year-old was tested by her teenage opponent, who knocked fellow Brit Heather Watson out in the last round, before the world No 14 pulled through 7-6 (4) 6-3 in one hour and 50 minutes.

And Konta was happy to have come through the match unscathed after a difficult start to her season that saw her come into this tournament having lost all three of her matches in 2020.

Speaking after her victory, she said: "It was an incredibly tough match. [Maria] is very crafty, and very creative on the court, and quite frankly made me uncomfortable today. She plays a game that is very tough to get rhythm against."

"I’m really pleased I was able to try to play the game, find a way, and basically be able to work my way through that match."

Next up for Konta is a clash with 18-year-old Russian Anastasia Potapova as the Brit bids to reach the semi-finals in Mexico.

"[Potapova is] very young, very talented, she’s playing better and better as the season’s going," Konta added.

"She’s young, so she’s obviously going to be playing very fearless, and really I’m sure inspired and motivated. That’s also exciting for me to play."
