Britain's Heather Watson booked her place in the second round of the Mexico Open with a hard-fought victory over American Coco Vandeweghe.

The 27 year-old battled back from a set down to win 4-6 6-4 6-4 in two hours and 33 minutes.

In a topsy-turvy opening set, Vandeweghe turned things around from a break down to dampen British hopes.

But Watson showed resolve as she claimed the only break early on in the second set to force the match to a decider.

And a double break secured the win for Watson in what was a marathon last set that lasted more than an hour.

After the match, the Brit said: "I was just pleased with how well I fought. I wasn't playing my best, but I stuck in there. I'm just really enjoying my tennis.

"I didn't feel like I had much rest. From the Australian Open, I had a week at home, but then I went straight to Fed Cup and was there the whole week.

"Fed Cup is a very high-stress environment, and I feel like I'm just about recovered to be here now."

Watson will now face Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko for a place in the quarter-finals in Mexico.
