Johanna Konta battles through to US Open second round as fellow Brit Harriet Dart is knocked out

Johanna Konta booked her place in the second round of the US Open after beating Daria Kasatkina 6-1 4-6 6-2 at Flushing Meadows.

The British number one got off to a flier at the beginning of the match, winning the first set in a swift 24 minutes.

But the Russian fought back in the second and claimed the only break to send the match to a decider.

And in a topsy-turvy final set which involved three breaks in the first four games, Konta pulled through and will now face another Russian in Margarita Gasparyan.

Meanwhile, the other British hope in the women's singles draw could not produce the same result as Harriet Dart was beaten 6-3 6-1 by Romanian Ana Bogdan.

The 23-year-old suffered a disastrous middle portion of the match where she lost eight games in a row and failed to recover.

In the men's singles, Dan Evans pulled through a tough match against Adrian Mannarino to win 6-4 6-3 2-6 6-3 and set up a second round match with 25th seed Lucas Pouille.

However, Cameron Norrie was eliminated by Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in a five set thriller, eventually losing 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 4-6 6-7 (7-5) 7-6 (7-2).
