Osaka and Barty through to the China Open final after contrasting semi-finals

Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty will contest the China Open final on Sunday after contrasting semi-final victories in Beijing.

World number four Osaka, who ended Bianca Andreescu's 17-match winning streak in the previous round, easily stopped Caroline Wozniacki's title defence. Barty saved a match point in her thrilling win over Kiki Bertens.

The Australian eventually won 6-3 3-6 7-6(7) and has now won all five matches between the pair. But it was the fourth three-setter they have contested as Bertens continued to give Barty problems as she has done in previous matches.

Barty won 12 of the first 14 points in the match in a dominant first set. But the match took a dramatic turn as Bertens won eight of the first 10 points in the second set, and ultimately held on to her single break advantage to take the match to a decider.

In the third set, Bertens had a lead of 5-3 and also leads in the tiebreak of 3-0 and 5-4, but Barty summoned all her mental strength to stop Bertens. She will play for her fourth title of the season on Sunday.

For Osaka, a 6-4 6-2 win confirmed she is well on her way to getting back to her best after some struggles during the middle of the season during Wilmbledon and the US Open. The 21-year-old won her last tournament, which was at home in Japan.

Wozniacki had seven chances to break during the match, but Osaka's first serve, on which she won 76 per cent of points, held firm. She then took chances of her own and in the second set, a double break saw her dominate. She will be full of confidence with her last two performances ahead of the final tomorrow.

Barty and Osaka have met three times previously, with the Japanese winning the previous encounter in Nottingham semi-final last year.
