Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin said her career changed after she beat Serena Williams at the French Open last year.

The 20 year-old beat Williams in straight sets in the third round in a strong 6-2 7-5 victory. Since the win, Kenin went on to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.

Kenin spoke to the Tennis magazine's podcast about the turning point in her game.

"Serena’s match at French Open changed everything. I got more confident, I played more free. Of course, there’s more expectations.

"Yeah, I just believed I could do it and it was a moment that I’m obviously never going to forget. Of course, Australian Open and that, two moments I’m never going to forget in my career. Hopefully, I’ll have more grand slam titles so I can add that to the list.”

She added that at the Fed Cup recently she gave Williams advice on her game.

“She was very supportive and it was funny because I was giving her advice on how to play faster because I just beat her. And then my dad was giving her advice.

“And she was taking it. I mean she could have easily just acted like she doesn’t care. She was taking it and she was nice about it after the match.”
