The WTA have announced that the women's section of the Rogers Cup has been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus crisis.

New safety measures have been introduced in the host Canadian province of Quebec, which prohibit holding of events until August 31, meaning the event, which was due to run from August 7-16, has been postponed.

A statement from the WTA said: "As a result of the measures imposed by the Quebec government prohibiting holding events until August 31, 2020, the Coupe Rogers in Montreal will postpone their event to 2021,

"The WTA reiterates that health and safety will always be the top priority. We understand this was a difficult decision and we look forward to being back in Montreal in 2021."

No announcement has been made about the men's event, which is scheduled to start on August 10, in Toronto.

Each year the women's and men's events switch between Montreal and Toronto.

The 2019 women's tournament was won by Candian Bianca Andreescu after Serena Williams withdrew from the final in the first set.
