WTA Rankings: Britain's Heather Watson breaks top 50 for first time since 2016 as Bencic leapfrogs Williams

Heather Watson returned to the top 50 in the latest WTA rankings for the first time since June 2016.

The Briton won her first WTA Tour title for nearly four years last week as she claimed the Mexican Open trophy after beating Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez in the final.

And the victory means she climbs from No 69 in the world up to No 49, one of the biggest movers in a week of little change in the rankings.

Elsewhere, Belinda Bencic was one of a few players moving up in the top 20, jumping above Serena Williams into eighth.

Aryna Sabalenka's triumph at the Qatar Open also saw her move up to 11th, above American Madison Keys and the woman she beat in the final in Doha, Petra Kvitova.

Other big movers include Svetlana Kuznetsova leaping from 46th to 32nd, Ons Jabeur moving up five places to 39th and Anastasia Potapova climbing to 89th.
