TV presenter Piers Morgan outraged as transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard closes in on Tokyo 2020

TV presenter Piers Morgan has slammed transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard after she won gold at a Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifier.

The 41 year-old Kiwi transitioned from a man to a women in her 30s and had previously competed as a man.

She is hoping to compete at Tokyo this summer in the women's super-lifting category.

Morgan has previously stated he believes transgender women athletes are a direct threat to women's sport and has now hit out again.

The Good Morning Britain host wrote on Twitter: "This is insane. Women’s rights to basic fairness & equality are getting destroyed at the altar of political correctness.

"Trans women born with biological male bodies have a massive physical advantage against women born with female bodies in any sport where power & strength are significant factors.

"This shouldn't be a contentious claim, it's just a rather obvious fact."

Hubbard has won two gold medals at the Roma World Cup which was the first Olympic qualifying event of the year. In 2017 she also won silver at the World Championships in the US.

Transgender athletes have been invited to compete in the Olympics since 2016 as long as they meet certain criteria.
