Two-time Olympic champion Daley Thompson believes Katarina Johnson-Thompson has the potential to become the best British heptathlete of all-time.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian won the world title in Doha last year with a British record points total of 6981.

Now she is hoping to emulate fellow countrywomen Denise Lewis and Jessica Ennis-Hill by claiming gold at the Olympics when she heads to Tokyo next summer.

And Thompson, who won gold in the decathlon at both the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Games, believes her triumph in Qatar will give her the confidence she needs to win in Japan.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: "She has the potential to be the best among them.

"She has few more things to win. Kat is world champion, but being Olympic champion is different class.

"Winning that world gold is a huge boost. It should prove to her that she is in with a chance - things have not always gone her way, but she has found a way to get through all of that.

"Her belief in herself will have grown, she has got a brilliant chance. She has so much talent, she can beat anyone."

At the 2016 Olympics, she came sixth in the hepathlon as teammate Ennis-Hill took the silver medal.

As well as being world champion, Johnson-Thompson is also a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the heptathlon and European and world indoor champion in the pentathlon.
