Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor named American boxing writers' Female Fighter of the Year'

Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor has been awarded Female Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.

The 33-year-old from Bray, Ireland won the last of the four belts in the 135 pound division back in June against Belgian Delfine Persoon.

On the undercard of Anthony Joshua's bout with Andy Ruiz in New York, Taylor won a close majority decision 95-95 96-94 96-94.

Later on in the year, the Olympic gold medalist then moved up to super lightweight in a bid to become a two-weight world champion.

And it was a move that paid off as she defeated Greece's Christina Linardatou in a more comfortable points victory to claim the WBO World Super Lightweight title.

The bout also made history as it was the first time a female fighter headlined a major UK boxing card, with Taylor capping off a brilliant night at the Manchester Arena.

"I'm honoured and delighted to be receiving this," she said. "This is one of the more prestigous awards in boxing. To receive it at the end of an amazing year is an even bigger honour.

"I think the biggest accomplishment this year was becoming the undisputed champion. Winning it at Madison Square Garden in one of the best fights of the year was huge for me and huge for my country. It's something I always dreamed of since turning pro."

The Irish superstar has already listed some of the opponents she would like to face in 2020, including Cecilia Braekhus, Amanda Serrano, and a rematch with Delfine Persoon.
