USA request Olympics to be delayed because it is 'not in the best interests of our athletes'

The head of track and field sports in the USA has supported calls for the Tokyo Olympics to be postponed.

Max Siegel, the chief executive of USA Track and Field has written to the US Olympic and Paralympic committee detailing why they believe it is not a good idea to stage the Games this summer.

Siegel said: "We certainly understand the ramifications of this request and the realities of trying to coordinate the logistics of a postponed Olympic Games around the schedules of other athletes, sport federations, key stakeholders etc.

"But the alternative of moving forward in light of the current global situation would not be in the best interest of our athletes (as difficult as that decision might be)."

A huge number of sporting events have already been postponed or cancelled including Euro 2020, Roland Garros, The Grand National,  the Premier League and a host of others.

British world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson has criticised the lack of joined up thinking when it comes to deciding what to do and has insisted it is 'impossible' to train while the Games are up in the air.

However, two-time Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock feels an agreement does not need to be reached now as there is still time before the IOC decide.
