Canada's rising star of ski-cross Mikayla Martin dies in mountain-bike accident

Canadian ski-cross racer Mikayla Martin has died after a mountain-bike accident near her home.

The 22-year-old was biking with her friend on the Slhaney Trail in Squamish when she was injured. She was later airlifted to hospital.

Alpine Canada President and CEO Vania Grandi said: "We wish to express our most sincere condolences to Christine and James, Mikayla's parents, as well as her entire family and circle of friends.

"Mikayla embodied a love of skiing and passion for ski cross that were boundless and words can't express how sorely she'll be missed."

She was Alpine Canada's rising star and won gold at the 2018 World Junior Championships in New Zealand before making her step-up to the senior circuit.

Martin finished in sixth place in Switzerland at this year's World Cup, qualifying for the World Ski Championships in February. But did not finish the season after suffering a head injury.

Canada's national police force added: "The death of Mikayla is a huge loss for the community of Squamish. It can't be stressed more that adventuring in Squamish comes with inherent risks.

"We can only ask that you take that one more risk assessment, one more second to check the geographics, one more look at your equipment, and one more conversation about what the plan is."
