Carissa Moore claims fourth world surfing title with semi-final finish at Maui Pro
World number one surfer Carissa Moore has won her fourth world surfing title in eight years despite being eliminated in the semi-finals of the final event at the Maui Pro.
The Honolulu-born 27-year-old, who previously won in 2011, 2013 and 2015, was beaten by Australia's Stephanie Gilmore in Hawaii, but due to a successful second half of the season she still secured the world title.
Gilmore went on to defeat fellow Aussie Tyler Wright in the final heat.
During the podium ceremony, Moore said she was 'still processing' her achievement but described the day as 'absolutely tremendous with an overwhelming amount of love'.
She is popular on the tour and was described by contest organisers as a surfer with 'real strength and a bright smile who lifts everyone up around her'.
The world title tops off a phenomenal week for the American, who earlier in the week earned provisional qualification for the US surfing team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Alongside 17-year-old Caroline Marks, Moore will compete in the inaugural inclusion of the sport at the games.
