Mikaela Shiffrin claims 43rd slalom win to equal Lindsey Vonn's World Cup record

US skier Mikaela Shiffrin dominated the World Cup slalom in Austria to earn the 43rd slalom victory of her career, equalling that of retired countrywoman Lindsey Vonn.

The 24-year-old now has 63 race titles overall, leaving her 2nd behind Vonn's 82.

Having already won the giant slalom, Shiffrin put her skis back on for Sunday's event when she posted the fastest time in both runs to come out ahead of her closest rival, Slovakia's Petra Vlhova.

Vonn was complimentary of Shiffrin's efforts and seemed confident she would pass her record, posting on twitter beforehand: "Can't wait to see you break the all-time record too!"

A near-flawless run from Shiffrin denied Vlhova a first slalom win in almost a year. Vlhova said: "It’s really difficult. She is all the time perfect, like today, she did both runs perfect.

“Second place is good but I always want to do better but today she was the best.”

For Shiffrin, the win put her in the record books again as she became the first male or female skier to finish in a podium position in 14 consecutive slalom races.
