Utah Royals FC secure 1-0 victory over Sky Blue FC in NWSL Challenge Cup

Utah Royals FC dominated Sky Blue FC in a controlled 1-0 victory in the National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup.

The win was Royals’ first victory of the tournament and it put them in second position in the table just behind North Carolina Courage.

Royals completely dominated the first half as the Blues did not get a single shot on target.

Blues also managed to be handed a yellow card as Midge Purce fouled Amy Rodriguez. This led to a free kick but the Royals could not convert the opportunity into a goal.

This seemed to be the tale of the half for Royals as they managed to set up multiple opportunities to score but could not manage to finish them off - until the 40th minute.

Vero Boquete hit a perfect cross to Rodriguez who scored for the hosts to put them ahead.

With no more goals in the first half, Royals headed into the break 1-0 up.

Arguably Blues’ best shot of the match came as the second half began after Royals’ Kate Del Fava conceded a free kick and was was given a yellow card.

Richardson hit it cleanly but her shot was way too high as it cleared the cross bar.

And with more frustrating chances not being converted from promising play on both sides the game saw no more goals and so Royals picked up the three points and Blues have yet to score.

OL Reign have also not put one past the keeper but they have their opportunity this evening as they play Houston Dash.

That match will kick off at 8pm MDT / 3am BST.
