Scientists Find Tasty Solution To Global Plastic Crisis

Researchers have discovered that E. coli can be used as a sustainable way to convert plastic into vanillin. Vanillin is an organic compound that most people would recognize as the primary scent and taste of vanilla. Researchers have been able to use lab-engineered E. coli to convert used plastic bottles into Vanillin. The transformation occurs via a series of chemical reactions with the product supposedly fit for human consumption. "The results from our research have major implications for the field of plastic sustainability and demonstrate the power of synthetic biology to address real-world challenges," Joanna Sadler, First Author And BBSRC Discovery Fellow From The School Of Biological Sciences, University Of Edinburgh. Vanillin is widely used in the food and cosmetics industry and had a global demand in excess of 37,000 tonnes in 2018.
