See destruction caused by rogue elephants fleeing illegal mining explosions

Residents of a village in eastern India are spending sleepless nights living in terror of wild elephants being driven away from their habitats due to illegal mining.

Karanjia in eastern India has seen homes and crops destroyed as the animals are panicked by explosives being used by mining workers.

The elephants migrate to human settlements in search of shelter and food and on top of the destruction they cause there have also been injuries to people in the village.

Wildlife expert Vanoomitra Acharya said: “Elephants from either Jharkhand or Simli Park wreak havoc in this area all year round. The main reason for this is illegal mining in environmentally sensitive areas.”
