Woman police officer injured entering south London flat as it explodes

A police officer has been injured in an explosion in south London.

The female officer suffered burns as what sounded like a ‘like a bomb going off’ rocked the neighbourhood, destroying the third-floor flat she was entering in New Cross, Lewisham at lunchtime on Friday. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the top-storey windows as 25 firefighters took two hours to bring the blaze under control.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and causing grievous bodily harm. The Met said the incident was not thought to be terror-related.
