Leeds Rhinos legend Lois Forsell has announced her retirement from rugby league due to injury.

The 28-year-old suffered an ACL injury in a match against St Helens in 2018. And complications since have meant that Forsell is forced to pack in the sport.

On the decision, Forsell said: “This was the worst decision for me to make and I am heartbroken that I will not be able to play again.

“It was not the outcome I wanted and although my head knows it is the right decision, my heart did not want to make this call.

“I am grateful for all the opportunities rugby league has given me and the many wonderful people I have worked with. Although this is a sad time for myself, I am very proud of all I have achieved and I hope to stay involved in the game.

“I may be done playing, but I’m not done – I am still passionate about rugby league and will continue to give my all to inspire the next generation and help the women’s game continue to grow.”

Forsell collected 18 caps for England over her career, playing in both the 2013 and 2017 World Cups. 

She signed for Leeds last year and was immediately named captain, leading her team to a Challenge Cup title and a League Leaders Shield in the Women's Super League.

England teammate Faye Gaskin tweeted: "Sad day for rugby league, what a player and a person! Thank you for everything you’ve done for the game and inspiring the next generation of players, a legend."
