Two-time Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams has retired from boxing due to fears of losing her sight.

The 37-year-old made history at London 2012 when she became the first ever female boxer to be crowned Olympic champion, before going on to retain her flyweight title at Rio 2016 - the first British boxer in 92 years to retain an Olympic title.

But in an emotional statement to the Yorkshire Post, she said: "I've been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss.

"I'm immensely honoured to have represented our country - to win double Olympic gold medals and then the WBO championship belt is a dream come true… but it's not without taking its toll on my body."

Adams finished her amateur career having also won Commonwealth, European and world gold medals.

She turned over as a professional in 2017 and after just five fights won the WBO World Flyweight title.

The Leeds-born athlete had hinted at a possible return to the amateur set-up for Tokyo 2020 to go for a third Olympic gold, but following the announcement that will not happen.

Adams' final fight of her career came back in September when she fought to a draw against Mexican Maria Salinas at the Royal Albert Hall.

It means she leaves professional boxing with a record of five victories and one draw.
