Chernobyl leads the way as Bafta unveil full list of nominations ahead of ‘virtual’ awards ceremony

Critically acclaimed fact-based drama Chernobyl has received 14 nominations for this year’s Bafta TV awards.

The collaboration between Sky Atlantic and HBO portrays the political cover-up surrounding the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster and equals Killing Eve for the highest ever number of nominations for a single series with its closest single rival, Netflix’s The Crown, a full seven behind.

Fleebag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Stath Lets Flats’ Jamie Demetriou top the individual nominations with three each while the controversial Newsnight interview ’Prince Andrew & The Epstein Scandal’ is one to watch out for in the News Coverage category.

This year’s ceremony will not follow its usual format and is instead being held behind closed doors with stars making their acceptance speeches via video-link.

Richard Ayoade will host the postponed event from a closed studio on July 31 and Stephen Mangan takes charge of the Craft Awards on July 17.

Bafta have also announced that there is a 22 per cent increase of nominees of colour across the categories compared to 2019.
