Cyclist Fabio Jakobsen out of coma but still in ‘really bad’ way after horror crash in Poland

Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen is out of his coma but still in a ‘really bad’ way following his horrific crash at the Tour of Poland.

The 23-year-old was forced into the barriers at high-speed by fellow countryman Dylan Groenewegen during a sprint finish on stage one of the five-day race on Wednesday.

Team manager Patrick Lefevere said: “The most important thing is that he is alive.”

"Priority number two is to restore his face. Fortunately, no vital organs have been hit, but all the bones in his face are broken and he has lost all his teeth.

"It's really, really bad," he told HLN.

Groenewegen received criticism for his dangerous riding style after the crash and has subsequently been suspended by his team Jumbo-Visma pending a disciplinary hearing from cycling’s governing body the UCI.

The sprinter took to social media earlier this week to apologise for his actions.

He said: "I hate what happened yesterday, I can't find the words to describe how sorry I am for Fabio and others who have been crashed or hit.

"At the moment, the health of Fabio is the most important thing. I think about him constantly."

Much of the cycling world came out to send their well wishes to Jakobsen including Lance Armstrong.

The disgraced former seven-time Tour de France winner said: "Thoughts and prayers go out to Fabio Jakobsen. Hang in there buddy. Been around this game a long time and not sure I’ve seen a crash that horrific."
