Sky Blue FC dominate Houston Dash to secure 2-0 victory in NWSL Challenge Cup

Sky Blue FC dominated against Houston Dash to secure a 2-0 win and shoot up to second place in the National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup.

It was a game of firsts for Sky Blue - their first goals in the tournament and their first win.

As the match kicked off it was clear who was the stronger as Sky Blue came out swinging. It was not just their attacking play which was clicking, they were quick in defence as they shut down every Dash opening.

Their hard work paid off in the 17th minute as forward Paige Monaghan smashed home after a great pass from Ifeoma Onumonu.

The first half action didn’t stop there as they struck again in the 34th minute following a mistake from Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell.

She came out of goal to clear from Onumonu but Nahomi Kawasumi was waiting on the left hand side and chipped the keeper’s clearance back over her head and into the goal.

It was clear Dash were hungry for a goal in the second half but they just couldn’t get a shot away and failed to get one on target .

The most dangerous chance from Sky Blue came in stoppage time as Evelyne Viens hit the post.

Both sides play once more before the quarter-finals.

Sky Blue will play leaders of the tournament North Carolina Courage on July 13 and Dash take on Washington Spirit on July 12.
