‘Tiger Woods: Back’ documentary featuring his epic rise, monumental fall and historic comeback to air on Friday night

A new documentary covering the rollercoaster career of one of the world’s greatest sports stars, 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, premieres on Friday night.

Tiger Woods: Back charts the career of the 44-year-old golfing icon with particular focus on his historic 2019 Masters win following a phenomenal comeback, four back surgeries, numerous injuries and a host of career-affecting incidents.

The documentary, which is told through Tiger’s words but without his direct contribution, also covers the controversial aspects of Woods’ career including his personal troubles and unseen footage, as well as a look at the close bond he shared with his late father.

His era of dominance is played out starting with his first major title at The Masters in 1997 and coming full circle to his reclaiming of the green jacket in 2019.

The golfing genius has also made headlines for the wrong reasons during his career, including his messy divorce following a string of infidelities in 2009, which led to him taking a break from the sport, as well as his conviction for driving under the influence in 2017.

Director Nick German told Sky News: “For the first time in Tiger's life, he was not just a back-page story, he was on the front pages too.

“Problems in his private life also affected his game and after that there seemed to be a kind of loss of aura around him.”

Throughout the programme are a number of exclusive interviews with golfing legends including Butch Harmon and Sir Nick Faldo as well as insights into Tiger’s injuries with consultant neurological spinal surgeon Peter Hamlyn.

The documentary completes the family circle as it concludes with Tiger hugging his children as he walks off the 18th green at The Masters - a perfect reflection of the image of the champion hugging his own father 22 years earlier.

Tiger Woods: Back airs on Sky Documentaries on Friday at 9pm and is available to download for Sky customers and NOW TV subscribers from Saturday.
