Who is Paula Reid? Meet the ‘rude’ reporter who sparked Trump’s latest abrupt press conference exit

When Donald Trump stormed out of a press conference this weekend, frustrated with a reporter’s persistent questioning, it was not the first time he’d lost his cool with CBS News’ Paula Reid.

Back in May he locked horns with the same reporter during a Q&A session in the White House.

Reid had asked: "Mr President, why haven’t you announced a plan to get 36 million unemployed Americans back to work? You are overseeing historic economic despair. What is the delay? Where is the plan?"

Trump did not take kindly to Reid’s line of questioning and hit back by saying: "Oh, I think we have announced a plan. We are opening up our country — just a rude person, you are.

"We are opening up our country, and we’re opening it up very fast. The plan is each state is opening and it is opening up very effectively, and when you see the numbers I think even you will be impressed, which is pretty hard to impress you."

Fast forward to this weekend when Reid challenged Trump after he stated he had passed the Veterans Choice law, a bill which was actually implemented by Barack Obama back in 2014.

The 38-year-old journalist said: "You said that you passed Veterans Choice. It was passed in 2014...it was a false statement, sir."

Trump failed to respond directly and tried to take another question as Reid continued to repeat hers. And with that, he called it a  day, saying: "OK, thank you very much, everybody," before walking off stage.

So, who is Paula Reid?

Reid started her career at CBS as an intern back in 2010 before becoming a production secretary and then in 2011 a digital journalist in New York.

She moved to Washington in 2014 to cover the Justice Department and was across the Hillary Clinton email controversy in 2016.

Reid also covered the Special Counsel investigation of Robert Mueller and then began White House reporting in 2017.

She’s far from the first female reporter to be on the receiving end of controversial attacks from Mr Trump.

Last week, the president attacked CNN’s Kaitlin Collins over a viral clip of the journalist that appeared to show her removing her face mask for a few seconds at the end of a press briefing.

He shared the clip in a tweet, writing: “CNN Faker!”

He and Collins had also clashed a few weeks earlier in the White House Rose Garden when the President refused to take a question from Ms Collins.

Just before the end of the briefing, he told Weijia Jang, White House correspondent for CBS News, to ‘ask China’ following her question about Covid testing in the US.

“Maybe that’s a question you should ask China,” he said. “Don’t ask me, ask China that question. OK?”

Ms Jang, who immigrated to the US from China at the age of two, replied: “Sir, why are you saying that to me specifically?”

"I'm telling you," Mr Trump replied. "I'm not saying it specifically to anybody. I'm saying it to anybody that asks a nasty question."

Ms Jiang pushed back, saying: “That’s not a nasty question,” and repeated her question once again.

As he attempted to ignore the journalist and call on another reporter, Ms Collins noted that she was previously called on but gave Ms Jiang an opportunity to respond to the president’s comments.

“I just wanted to let my colleague finish,” Ms Collins said. “Can I ask you a question?”

Mr Trump then said: “Ladies and gentleman, thank you very much," before storming off.
