US Soccer star Carli Lloyd says Olympic postponement is 'disappointing, but the right call'

US soccer star Carli Lloyd believes the postponement of the Olympics is the 'right call' although she is 'disappointed'.

Lloyd and her US team-mates were aiming to achieve back-to-back gold medals this summer in Tokyo but they will now have to wait until 2021.

Olympic bosses confirmed today that they were pushing back the games for a year due to the coronavirus.

Lloyd said: "I think that what's going on right now is an unprecedented event and the majority of us have never been through something like this before.

"It's affected the globe and it's a tough call. Olympics happen every four years, this isn't just a yearly thing so there's a lot that has to go into account but this is bigger than sports.

"It's bigger than an Olympics and I think it was definitely the right call. Disappointed, you obviously look forward to this, as all the other athletes are around the world.

"But I think for the safety of everybody it's definitely the best thing," she told ABC News.

Lloyd recently said she believed that she and her husband had coronavirus in February and that she felt 'lost' in self-isolation.
