Russian athletes, competing as ‘ROC’, arrive in Tokyo for Olympics

Dozens of Russian athletes have arrived in Tokyo ahead of the Olympic Games, which start on Friday.

Due to the doping suspension in place against the national federation, the athletes are competing as individuals, with the Russian name, flag and anthem banned from the event.

They are participating under the acronym ‘ROC’ (Russian Olympic Committee) and had to apply for individual exemptions to gain ‘authorised neutral athlete’ status after their drug-testing records had been vetted.

The ban followed a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling last year on doping laboratory data which the court found was manipulated while in storage in Moscow.
