Boris Johnson describes Stop and Search as ‘kind and loving’

Boris Johnson has said he will not ‘give in’ over plans to increase police powers for Stop and Search in some areas.

But he raised a few eyebrows when speaking to reporters in Surrey as he defended proposals to allow officers to search someone without reasonable grounds.

The Prime Minister said of relieving someone of a dangerous weapon: "I don't think that's strong-armed tactics, I think that's a kind and a loving thing to do."

He said plans for a named police officer for every neighbourhood would ensure that victims of crime could speak to someone who understood the local area. But Labour leader Keir Starmer described it as a ‘ridiculous gimmick’.
